2005-02-07 - 10:14 p.m. just got back from watching The Incredibles. the fantastic thing about having a cheap movie theater just five minutes away is that you can watch it whenever you want... and the seats are so great! there are only four chairs per row, so they're super plush and comfy, and the rows only go up to 'H'. and the location's a bit in the boonies, so its only $45. anyways. let me start a little about the incredibles. about a month ago animator alan barillaro paid a visit to our school. he works for pixar, is 28 years old, and by the way, his parents are teachers at our school. sam and bonita (okay, AND me) thought he was cute. he is cute and he went to art school to boot. even more incentive for me... (by the way, sent off my portfolio to OCAD today) on to the review. the storyline of the incredibles is fairly simple - super heroes save the world, super hero screws up, super heroes are shunned (actually, sued; that cracked me up well into the middle of the movie) until said super hero saves the world again. thats basically the story of the incredibles movie, but pixar does a damn good job of making sure you don't notice. its humour switches between brash and subtle, but its hard to give examples without giving too much away. the portrayal of the superheroes trying to fit in as middle class suburbanites is bang on: example of subtle humour. the physical comedy of having super powers: example of its bold humour. this film starts off creatively but ends so-so. at least they didn't ride off into the sunset on a jet/boat a la spy kids. i'm still amazed at how they could use elastigirl for basically everything. there are basically no flaws about the movie except for one thing: it does not surpass finding nemo. that's a pretty hard thing to do, and i don't fault anyone for it. overall rating: 4.5/5
